Thursday's debate was tough

This is Rahna Epting, MoveOn's executive director. I want to level with you.

Dear MoveOn member,

This is Rahna Epting, MoveOn's executive director. I want to level with you. Thursday's debate was very tough—and we still have an election that we absolutely must win, together. More could not be on the line—freedom, democracy, justice, our shared humanity, dignity, and hope.

And just four months before the most important election of our lifetime, MoveOn's fundraising is also hundreds of thousands of dollars behind our target.

But here's the good news: With just ONE day left until the end of this quarter, MoveOn's fundraising is finally starting to surge—in response to our plan to scale up a team of social media influencers to respond to Trump's dominating lead on TikTok and help combat Trump's surge with young voters.

When Trump joined TikTok in June, he amassed 5 million followers within three days—14 times as many as President Joe Biden has.1 This is a huge problem because about one-third of people younger than 30 regularly get their news from TikTok.2 And now, the most recent polling shows that support for President Biden among young voters is low and trending in the wrong direction.3

To reach young voters where they are, MoveOn has big plans to build our presence on TikTok and other social media platforms. We're scaling up a team of social media influencers to spread the word to young people about Trump's terrifying plans. We're partnering with influencers to flood social media with compelling, persuasive content to combat the right. These influencers have hundreds of millions of followers on social media sites where young people get their news and are already engaging on these issues.

But we can go all-in on this only if we can raise the funds.

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, one of the few progressives with a large following on TikTok, has warned that "progressives need many more voices with many more followers on TikTok, Discord, Instagram, and other social media." And that's exactly what we are doing.

This is crucial now, especially as we sound the alarm about Project 2025—the right's nearly 1,000-page blueprint for turning America into a fascist police state, by executive order and without an act of Congress, if Trump is reelected.

After a difficult first half of the year, MoveOn just received a burst of donations from members like you—so many of your fellow MoveOn members are excited about this campaign. I want to go all-in on this new micro-influencer program without making cuts to our other critical work, which includes phone-banking, canvassing, postcards, and other efforts to reach voters. But to do that, I need to know that we can start the third quarter of the year strong.

Will you start a donation of $5 a month by midnight tonight, so that we can start the third quarter strong?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Your donation will help MoveOn inform young people about Project 2025 and Trump's agenda on social media, via SMS, through digital ads, and more.

We need to do so much, and quickly. Your support couldn't be more critical.

Election Day feels far away, but the reality is that it'll soon be too late to launch new major initiatives, to book online advertising inventory, to build up our infrastructure … And too late to go all-in on our efforts to effectively combat the unprecedented pro-Trump propaganda that's poisoning the minds of Generation Z on TikTok and other social media outlets.

Our end-of-quarter deadline is this Sunday, at midnight! And the third quarter will be the last full quarter before Election Day.

Please start a $5 monthly donation, TODAY! Help MoveOn end the quarter strong, to fight back against Trump and the MAGA influencers who are spewing propaganda and hate to young voters.

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

We can't do it without you, William. It's not about what you give, but that if you can afford to, you give right now, today, so that we can start the third quarter of the year strong.

I hope that you have a great summer, and thanks so much for all you do.

–Rahna Epting, Executive Director

About the debate ...

Will we look back on this moment as the time when we lost the nation to Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies?

Dear MoveOn member,

We knew that Donald Trump was going to lie during Thursday night's presidential election debate, but the expanse of his lies was breathtaking.

Saying that the U.S. border is "known as the most dangerous place of anywhere in the world." Repeating over and over again that Democratic states allow infanticide. It was enraging to see from a man who is steps away from holding the most powerful office in America.

But perhaps the most terrifying outcome of the debate is that already, clips of Trump's disinformation are being turned into TikTok videos, where according to the Pew Research Center, one-third of people under 30 are getting their news.1

MAGA is dominating social media right now, especially on TikTok, and we just cannot sit back and let it happen, William. The stakes are just too high.

MoveOn has been sounding the alarm about the lies Trump is telling and what he is really planning for his second term, and we are building the infrastructure to ensure that voters across the country hear about it. Right now, we are prepping a cadre of very popular social media influencers who can challenge the MAGA social media machine and make Trump's disastrous policies go viral. It's a plan we know will work—but we need your help to see it to fruition.

Will you start a $5 monthly donation to MoveOn and help reach the voters who will make or break the 2024 election?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

If you watched the debate, you know that not only did Trump lie, but he dodged every question possible about what he will actually do as president. He didn't answer questions about his mass deportation plan, his administration's plan for policing, or even his willingness to respect the results of the upcoming election.

We will never get the truth out of Trump. It's up to us to get through to voters—especially those "surge voters" in swing states who need to turn out to make a difference—with what Trump's second term will look like and what's at stake.

What needs to go viral isn't videos of Trump but rather critical information about far-right Project 2025 and what Trump has been saying to his donors behind closed doors. We aren't just building a cadre of social media influencers, we are highlighting MoveOn members' personal stories. We are relaunching our Real Voter Voices project, which in 2018 used testimonials from ordinary Americans to reach tens of thousands of voters, which helped achieve a blue wave and take back the House of Representatives.

MoveOn is building on that success this year, collecting thousands of testimonial videos from MoveOn members speaking authentically about the stakes of the 2024 election and our civil rights, why they are voting, and the candidates they are supporting. So we're planning to flood the digital airwaves with members, micro-influencers, and MoveOn's own accounts.

Research shows that when it comes to election news, people don't trust traditional media, but instead their friends and family.2 The personal connections our election plan builds—whether it's through followers of social media influencers, MoveOn members telling their individual stories, or facilitating the ability of voters to easily reach out and talk to would-be voters who need a little push to get to the polls—are the key to defeating MAGA and Trump in November. But this is expensive and painstaking work, and we are a grassroots organization that depends on support from our members.

If we fall short now, there is no making it up—we will be out of time to put all of these plans into action. If you've been waiting to make an election donation to MoveOn, it has never been more urgent. Will you start a $5 monthly donation?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

William, the next month will tell us so much about how this election will go.

We just cannot have a repeat of the summer of 2016, when Trump was severely underestimated and Hillary Clinton's election seemed like a sure thing. Fundraising was low and voters were complacent. But that is exactly what seems to be happening. Right now, MoveOn is facing a serious fundraising shortfall, and it's threatening our voter turnout program.

Will we look back on this moment as the time when we lost the nation to Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies? Or will we know it as the moment when MoveOn members came together and did everything possible to stop Trump from destroying our democracy?

Every single dollar you give makes a difference, but we need to know we can count on you right now.

Please start a $5 monthly donation.

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Will you sign the petition calling on state leaders to reject Oklahoma's unconstitutional public school Bible mandate?

Oklahoma's recent Bible mandate is part of a growing Christian nationalist movement to break down the walls separating church and state.

Will you sign the petition calling on state leaders to reject Oklahoma's unconstitutional public school Bible mandate?

Dear MoveOn member,

On Thursday, Oklahoma's far-right and extreme State Superintendent Ryan Walters shockingly announced that he would require the Bible to be taught in fifth through 12th grades, a clear violation of students' freedom of religion. He even suggested providing a uniform curriculum to direct how educators incorporate the Bible into their classrooms.1 This is right out of the Christian nationalist playbook and, if enforced in Oklahoma, could signal other far-right extremists to pass similar requirements in states across the country.

There's nothing wrong with teaching a religious text as part of history and culture. But forcing students of diverse faiths and religions to learn one specific religious text and not any others is wrong. Oklahoma's recent Bible mandate is part of a growing Christian nationalist movement to break down the walls separating church and state. And public schools—not just in Oklahoma but across the country—are ground zero. We can't let that happen.

Add your name to demand Oklahoma state leaders, educators, and school districts reject this unconstitutional public school Bible mandate!

Oklahoma's Bible mandate violates the religious freedom of children and families across the state. We have to stop it from going into effect!

Last year, Oklahoma officials tried to approve a publicly funded religious charter school, which would have been the first in the country. Just last week, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled against it, but it's likely to be appealed.2 This Bible mandate is just the beginning, and we have to make sure leaders know that we are ready to fight to protect religious pluralism essential to our democratic freedom and values.

The fight for religious freedom—as well as freedom from religion—is taking place right now in Oklahoma. Sign the petition to urge state leaders to reject Superintendent Walters' Bible mandate NOW and commit to upholding the rights of children and families!

Superintendent Walters ran—and won—on a platform denouncing "woke ideology" and promoting book bans, so it's ironic but no surprise that he has continued pushing an extremist agenda by mandating the Bible in public schools across the state. This is the same superintendent who has been vehemently opposed to critical race theory in schools, sparking outrage when he implied that the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, where white people in Oklahoma killed 300 Black people, was not due to racism.3

His announcement follows just days after Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a state law requiring the Ten Commandments to be posted in public school classrooms. Similar bills were introduced in Mississippi and West Virginia, and one was passed in Arizona that would allow–not require—teachers to display the Ten Commandments.4 This is clearly part of a coordinated conservative playbook to take control of our public schools, undermine public education, and push an extreme Christian nationalist agenda nationwide. We have to stop it in its tracks.

Add your name to the petition now and fight back against Oklahoma's latest attack against religious freedom.

Thanks for all you do.

The Supreme Court just ruled to shield insurrectionists from accountability. Will you sign the petition to put an end to SCOTUS corruption NOW?

It's time for Congress to step in and take action to bring trust back into the Supreme Court and stop further corruption! Sign the petition now.

The Supreme Court just ruled to shield insurrectionists from accountability. This would not have happened if there were an enforceable ethics rules barring Justices Alito and Thomas from siding with the majority because they have a clear conflict of interest. Will you sign the petition to demand Congress take action to stop Supreme Court corruption NOW?

Dear MoveOn member,

The Supreme Court just ruled in favor of January 6 rioters by saying that prosecutors overstepped by using an obstruction law to charge January 6 rioter, Joseph Fischer.1 This decision could impact the charges facing hundreds of insurrectionists, including Donald Trump.

Enough! It is way past time for Congress to put an end to corruption on the Supreme Court. Click here to sign the petition with more than 130,000 other MoveOn members.

A narrow majority ruled that the law that hundreds of insurrectionists were charged with was intended for circumstances involving tampering with physical evidence.2 Now, the case goes back to the lower court to decide whether the charges are valid for Fischer, and this will likely lead to courts' dismissing this charge for other January 6 insurrectionists as well.3

The Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether Donald Trump has "absolute presidential immunity" or not, but one thing is clear—the right-wing-packed court's hearing this case to begin with is a win for Donald Trump. First, they helped delay his federal elections trial by entertaining his claim that he's immune from prosecution, and now, the court has issued a win to January 6 rioters.

The nation's highest court has a serious corruption problem. Justice Clarence Thomas's wife, Ginni Thomas, had a key role in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election.4 Justice Samuel Alito had multiple insurrectionist-affiliated flags hanging outside of his homes.5 They were both allowed to rule in this case, even with clear conflicts of interests.

Justices Alito and Thomas need to be held accountable for their ethics problems, and Congress needs to step in immediately to stop further corruption on the court. Will you sign the petition demanding that Congress take action?

Add your name: Congress needs to take action NOW to stop further corruption on the Supreme Court.

Justices Thomas and Alito have both ruled in cases involving January 6 and Donald Trump, knowing that they have a clear conflict of interest—and ignoring calls from congressional leaders and everyday Americans demanding that they do the right thing and recuse themselves. The Supreme Court's "code of ethics" has no way of being properly enforced—and today's ruling shows that the justices won't hold themselves accountable, and, instead will protect their ally Donald Trump.6

It's time for Congress to step in and take action to bring trust back to the Supreme Court and stop further corruption! Sign the petition.

Congress has the power to prevent further corruption on the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act would adopt a code of conduct for justices and create a system for investigating and receiving complaints.7 It would also establish rules for governing the disclosure of gifts, travel, and income received by justices.

The right-wing-packed Supreme Court's decisions have caused immeasurable harm to our communities. From overturning Roe and stripping our bodily autonomy away to criminalizing unhoused people for not having shelter to harming immigrants and their families and so much more.8,9

Leaders in Congress must take swift action NOW in order to stop further corruption on the court.

Together, we can call on Congress to impose commonsense ethics rules and ensure that our highest court respects precedent and stands up for the American people, not MAGA extremists and special interests.

Sign the petition now and share with three friends.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last weekend, Kevin Roberts, the president of The Heritage Foundation, which is behind the Project 2025 plan, went on MSNBC to not just defend the policy proposal but to gloat about it and celebrate it.1

During his interview, he said that the goal of Project 2025 was to "institutionalize Trumpism" as the guiding principles for our government.2 Terrifying.

The vast majority of voters do not agree with plans laid out in Project 2025, and when they hear about it, they abandon Trump and the Republicans in droves. The problem is, not enough voters know that it exists. Which is why MoveOn is dedicating our resources to get the truth out to voters.

Below you will find a deep dive into one of the proposals in Project 2025 and its consequences, but first we need to ask you: Can you make a $9 donation right now to give MoveOn the resources to run the most strategic and innovative election campaign in our 25-year history in order to defeat Trump and prevent Project 2025 from ever being implemented?

There are so many awful, bigoted, and authoritarian elements of Project 2025, but let's focus on one that Roberts discussed at length during his interview and that Trump has parroted on the campaign trail: abolishing the Department of Education.3

On MSNBC, Roberts affirmed that Project 2025 calls for firing "more than 50,000" career civil servants and that thousands of those would come from the Education Department when it is shut down.4

What he refused to discuss, however, were the actual consequences of eliminating the department. In short, they would be catastrophic.

The DOE has wide-ranging responsibilities overseeing education in our nation, but its three largest areas of work are providing student loans, managing the Title I program, and implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).5

So what would happen to these programs if the department suddenly disappeared?

Student Loans
Each year, the federal government provides more than $111 billion in federal student aid to nearly 7 million students.6,7 If Project 2025 is implemented, funding for these loans will be cut by at least half and could be eliminated altogether.8

That means 7 million students who are currently able to access higher education because of federal financial aid will be at risk of losing those opportunities. The impacts will be felt entirely by students from poor, working, and middle-class families and will disproportionately affect students of color.

This would radically reshape the future of our country, which is precisely the goal of Project 2025.

We cannot allow billions of dollars in life-changing financial aid to be ripped away on a whim. Please chip in $9 to power our 2024 election work to stop it from happening.

Title I
Each year, the Title I program provides nearly $18 billion in supplemental funding to schools and school districts in poor and underserved communities across the country.9 It is one of the most important pieces of education legislation in U.S. history, and it helps to provide equal access to education for all children in America, no matter where they live or how much money they have.10

Cutting funding would mean even less money for teachers, mental health staff, and interventions at Title I schools. It would mean even less money to pay essential educators. It would mean leaving tens of millions of students behind.

Title I has been successful at decreasing the racial wealth gap and income inequality for nearly 60 years. Will you make a $9 gift now to help protect it for decades to come?

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
IDEA ensures that more than 6.5 million infants, toddlers, children, and young adults with disabilities have free access to special education and other resources from birth to age 21.11 It was originally passed in 1975 and since then has helped to provide both funding and legal protection against discrimination for hundreds of millions of people with disabilities.12

Without funding for IDEA, there will be no way to hold schools accountable for not providing adequate services to students, programs that millions of people with disabilities rely on will be cut, and millions of families will be left in the lurch.

Students with disabilities deserve equal access to education. Chip in $9 now to stop Project 2025 from abandoning them.

Let's get one thing straight: It is not an accident that so many of Project 2025's policies harm poor and marginalized communities and people of color.

This program is a surgical attack on those communities, with the goal of making America a white Christian nationalist nation that is run by and serves only the wealthy.

William, the policies laid out in Project 2025 are so extreme, so cartoonishly villainous, that voters have a difficult time believing it is even real.

But it is very real.

Which is why MoveOn is dedicating our resources to ensuring that key voters across swing states and districts know the truth about Project 2025 before they head to the polls—but we need your help to keep our work going.

Project 2025 is an existential threat to our futures. Please, if you are able, make a $9 donation right now to help defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies this November and send this hateful, bigoted, dangerous plan into the trash heap of history.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? The MAGA movement's book bans have forced teachers and librarians across the country to remove books from their shelves and censor what young people can learn. MoveOn is fighting back, including by filling a "Banned Bookmobile" with books that the far right has banned and driving it to key cities and towns to raise the visibility of book bans, hand out banned books for free, and bring people together to stop censorship. To keep up the fight against book bans and the MAGA politicians who support them, we need your help.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Voters just defied history and stopped a MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms, our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but only if we work together.

Will you chip in monthly to power our critical work?

Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Project 2025 wants to "institutionalize Trumpism"

Last weekend, Kevin Roberts, the president of The Heritage Foundation, which is behind the Project 2025 plan, went on MSNBC to not just defend the policy proposal, but to gloat about it and celebrate it.

Sign the petition: Protect and expand access to abortion and all reproductive health care!

Join more than 210,000 people in signing the petition to ask President Biden to use all his power to ensure access to abortion care by declaring a public health and national emergency around abortion.

Hi William!

Last summer, the Trump-packed Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case protecting abortion rights in our country, and the effects of this attack on our freedoms and bodily autonomy have been felt across the nation. Several right-wing anti-abortion laws have taken effect in state after state to ban abortion and criminalize those who seek and provide it.1

Will you rise in solidarity with more than 215,000 people and sign the petition demanding that President Biden continue to use the power he has to ensure access to abortion?

We know that Republicans across the country won't stop with the overturning of Roe: They have and will continue to go after our right to contraception, limit access to self-managed abortion, and are already working toward passing a national abortion ban.2 But together, we can organize to make sure that doesn't happen.

The Biden administration has taken steps to make it easier to get abortion medication from pharmacies and for the Postal Service to deliver pills nationwide.3 We need to build on this progress.

The people who need abortions can't wait for these actions in Congress—not while states are actively passing bans. There is not a moment to lose, because abortion care is time-sensitive.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your loved ones to spread the word.

Thanks for all you do.

Thanks for joining us!

By taking action with MoveOn, you are now part of a community of millions of people across the country mobilizing to make our country more equitable and a place where everyone can thrive.

Dear William,

Welcome to MoveOn!

By taking action with MoveOn, you are now part of a community of millions of people across the country mobilizing to make our country more equitable and a place where everyone can thrive. We are from all 50 states, from big cities to rural towns, and we come together to work toward an inclusive and progressive future—an America for all of us.

We believe that grassroots participation—people power—is key to making change, whether it's supporting a candidate, passing laws, or shifting our culture for the better.

Here at MoveOn, you've found a way to advocate for the world you envision alongside allies in the fight. MoveOn members get involved in a host of different ways:

  • Starting and sharing petitions.
  • Writing a letter to the editor of a publication to share a perspective and spark public conversation on an issue.
  • Getting out the vote.
  • Working and organizing on the ground.
  • Volunteering.
  • And more!

Just this year, MoveOn members have banded together to support transformational change on a host of important issues. During a special election this April in Wisconsin, MoveOn members worked together to help win the most expensive state supreme court race in history. They contacted more than 400,000 Wisconsinites through text and phone banks, tabling, and relational organizing, contributing to Judge Janet Protasiewicz's victory! This win cemented the first liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 15 years and defended abortion access from MAGA Republican attacks on Americans' bodily autonomy. Now, Wisconsin MoveOn members will make sure that MAGA state Republicans fail in their plot to neutralize her role on the bench.

And the fight for our futures and our freedoms continues. Book bans—right-wing attacks against our freedoms to learn and read—are being instituted across the country by Republican extremists in an attempt to render our histories and our communities invisible, largely targeting LGBTQ+ people and people of color. MoveOn members joined forces this summer to fight back by powering the first-ever Banned Bookmobile Tour.

The tour delivered free banned books to community after community, sending a message to MAGA extremists that we won't accept their bans.

Check out this short video to hear from MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting, special guests, and some of the MoveOn members who found the Banned Bookmobile on the road.

Yes, our nation is facing big challenges—and the only path forward is to come together to build a country where we can all thrive. We're happy you're here.

Thanks for all you do.

–Rahna, Jane, Julia, Mana, and the rest of the MoveOn team

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, MoveOn needs your help.
