Last year, corrupt, Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices (many of whom were appointed by Trump) shamefully ripped President Biden's student loan relief away from 40 million Americans, leaving tens of millions of borrowers without a lifeline as payments restarted again.¹

In response, President Biden enacted his "Plan B" to deliver student debt relief but was again challenged in a lawsuit brought by a coalition of Republican attorneys general. Their case has no legal standing—even a Republican-appointed judge in Georgia's federal court rebuffed the case and dismissed it last month.² President Biden's plan to deliver student debt relief is legal and necessary, and he must press on to ensure people get the relief they desperately need through executive action before it's too late.

Millions of borrowers, including seniors who would have their Social Security garnished under Trump and victims of for-profit institutions, are counting on relief. There is no time to waste. President Biden must finish the job and cancel student debt now.

Time and time again, the far-right majority of the Supreme Court has put special interests and politics ahead of people and above delivering justice under the law. But we cannot and will not be silent.

Student debt fuels economic, gender, and racial inequality. Our persistent racial wealth gap means that students of color, especially those who are Black and brown, are more likely to have student debt, borrow in higher quantities, and face more struggles in repayment.³

A higher education should be the key to a better future, instead of a lifetime debt sentence that limits borrowers' ability to buy homes, start small businesses, and save for retirement, cutting into opportunities for wealth-building over their lifetimes. This is why student debt cancellation is so important.

And President Biden can finish the job he's already started by issuing an executive order to cancel student debt. Will you add your name to the petition?

Trump's agenda includes dismantling the Department of Education (DOE), which would have devastating impacts on our communities. The DOE oversees the Pell Grant and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which gives aid to college students who need financial aid.⁴ The DOE also enforces the civil rights of students and supports school programs that support students with disabilities.⁵

But Trump, Republicans, and Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices cannot have the last word. We won't let them win. We have to push back and be in solidarity with each other.

Together, we can keep getting loud to show President Biden that he has the power to to give millions of Americans the student debt relief they need and deserve. President Biden must cancel student debt via executive order before Trump and Republicans gain control over all three branches of our federal government.

A bill that just passed the House, H.R. 9495, poses a serious threat to nonprofit organizations, possibly even MoveOn.

A bill that just passed the House, H.R. 9495, poses a serious threat to nonprofit organizations, possibly even MoveOn. And it could be used by Donald Trump and his administration to attempt to down nonprofits with NO due process.¹

Donald Trump and the right wing fear the power of progressives. Under his first administration, we stood up to him relentlessly—with the women's march, the fight against family separation, holding him accountable on the economy and the impact of COVID on working families (and passing a stunning amount of Democratic priorities during that time, including a child care tax credit!), litigation, organizing to stall his MAGA agenda in Congress, and more.

So it's no surprise that Republicans are trying to stop us by backing a bill that would grant Trump's Treasury Department unilateral power to label nonprofits as "terrorist-supporting organizations" and revoke their tax-exempt status.²

Despite widespread opposition from more than 150 organizations, led by the ACLU, the House passed this dangerous bill.^3,4 We cannot allow the bill to advance in the Senate.

William, we need to sound the alarm right now to stop H.R. 9495, prevent Trump and his cronies from shutting down nonprofit organizations, and build the power we will need to fight back against these attacks for the next four years. In our country, Trump and the MAGA movement must face their political opposition head-on, not use the power of the state to try to stifle dissent.

The H.R. 9495 bill was originally written to attack nongovernmental organizations trying to support the Palestinian people and confront Israel's policies.⁵ Organizations supporting Palestinians and providing critical aid cannot afford to be hindered, with Israel blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza and Israeli attacks killing more than 43,000 Palestinian people, including more than 17,000 children since October 7, 2023.⁶

And this bill's reach goes far beyond attacking pro-Palestinian organizations. It was never about stopping terrorist financing. It's about removing due process and stopping free speech.⁷

If passed, this bill could give Trump—who has a history of using "national emergencies" to seize power—the ability to declare that an organization is "supporting terrorists" with no proof, no burden of evidence, no due process.^8,9

That's why more than 150 religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+, environmental, and educational organizations have spoken up against this immoral and threatening bill.¹⁰

This is a critical moment to show Trump and his MAGA cronies that we will fight back every time he tries implement his draconian strategies.

This isn't the first time that Trump or his allies have tried to weaponize the federal government against groups that oppose them.

When MoveOn called out the No Labels party—which was funded by MAGA big donors—and its ploy to siphon off votes for Democrats and throw the election to Trump, the group filed a Department of Justice complaint against us.¹¹

We've been sued for speaking out against the January 6 insurrection, too.¹²

We aren't giving in to Elon Musk

A new figure has emerged from the 2024 presidential election, and no, it's not JD Vance.

A new figure has emerged from the 2024 presidential election, and no, it's not Vice President-elect JD Vance.

It's Elon Musk.

Whether it's heading up a so-called "Department of Government Efficiency," taking phone calls with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Mar-a-Lago, or publicly stating who he thinks should be treasury secretary, Musk is wielding massive control over Donald Trump—and the U.S. government.^1,2,3

And while it's no surprise that a billionaire with numerous government contracts would have influence, what really platformed Musk into power is his total control over Twitter/X. In just under two years, he was able to transform it from a social media platform into a right-wing propaganda machine.

We can undermine Musk's power stronghold in a surprisingly easy way: Stop posting on X, and encourage our half million followers to join us on Bluesky. MoveOn is refusing to contribute any longer to Musk's influence, and we're winding down our work on X and ramping up our posts on Bluesky. But X was one of our strongest pipelines to the public, and rebuilding a social media infrastructure on a new platform takes serious resources.

Leaving X won't be easy, and we need to start right away building our Bluesky account and audience to keep our movement going. Will you donate $9 to help us devote the resources needed to build this new platform while still fighting Trump's MAGA takeover?

It's no accident that X now seems much more right-wing. Studies show Musk worked directly with the Trump campaign to influence the election.⁴

X's AI-powered trending section promoted voter-fraud conspiracy theories and smears against Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk launched an X community devoted to Trump propaganda.⁵

With Musk at the reins, MoveOn and other organizations trying to get the facts out were squashed while right-wing content was promoted.

And now Musk is reaping the rewards. Musk is now in charge of a program with a specific mandate of dismantling regulation and slashing government programs—which will enrich him even more.⁶

Fortunately, the public isn't buying into this new Musk-run world.

Bluesky is a decentralized, open-source platform that can't be controlled by one billionaire, and since the election, the app has been gaining 1 million new followers a day.⁷ Bluesky doesn't rent out blue checks to user profiles with a pay-to-play model like X. Instead, Bluesky helps prevent misinformation by verifying users for free with their website domain.⁸ Bluesky also offers strong blocking features, unlike X's weakened block that has been blasted for enabling harassment.^9,10 The fact that it's a democratic organization is also why MoveOn chose Bluesky.

MoveOn is taking a stand and stopping our daily X posts. We need to leverage our new Bluesky account to reach millions of new people in the fight against Trump and Musk. Please donate $9 today.

No matter how far Musk has gone to turn X into a propaganda machine, it is still incredibly ingrained in the public consciousness.

More than half a billion people use X every month, and posts there are reported in news articles and shared on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.¹¹

MoveOn has hundreds of thousands of followers on X, and we can't just shift those to Bluesky—we have to reach out and convince them to move with us. We also need to advertise our new account, work with the media to recognize the reach we have there, and introduce ourselves to an entirely new audience. But the alternative—relying on X and enriching Musk further—is just not an option.

We are preparing now for a Donald Trump presidency. We know that the worst and most unconstitutional policies he will try to pass will be battled out through the courts—and so does Trump. Right now, there are 29 judicial nominees awaiting Senate confirmation votes. We have to act urgently to confirm as many judges as possible. Demand President Biden and the U.S. Senate to do whatever it takes to confirm judicial vacancies immediately!

In just four years, President Biden and the Senate have confirmed 215 judicial nominees—including historic Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. The majority of these appointments were women and people of color, increasing the racial diversity of the federal courts.³ But with Trump poised to take over the White House in just a couple of months, we have to work quickly to fill all vacant judicial positions before Trump and Senate Republicans start stacking the courts with extremists again.

The Senate needs to be creative in their efforts. Whether it's working weekends or staying late–judges must be a priority. Add your name to the petition to urge Congress to work swiftly!

Over the next four years, roughly 250 circuit and district court judges are, or will become, eligible to take a form of semi-retirement which allows them to be replaced. On top of the current and known future vacancies in states with two Republican senators, there is a very real chance that Trump will get to appoint another 200+ lower-court judges. Not to mention the fact that, depending on retirements at the highest level of our judicial system, he will also likely get to appoint at least two more Supreme Court justices.⁴ A next Trump presidency is going to dramatically shape the courts for decades to come.

The negative impact Trump's appointments will have on our rights and freedoms cannot be understated. We've already seen the damage the current Trump justices and judges have unleashed on our civil rights. All three Trump Supreme Court justices were part of the majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade.⁵ And Trump's circuit court judges have repeatedly authored or joined anti-worker opinions, including cases which made it harder to file discrimination claims.⁶

This is our last chance to act to confirm judges who will help protect our fundamental rights and serve as the last line of defense to uphold our nation's laws and the Constitution.

Congress is setting the stage for an attack on MoveOn

The bill, H.R. 9495, gives the Treasury Department—i.e., the Trump administration—unilateral power to declare a nonprofit to be a "terrorist-supporting organization" and strip its tax-exempt status.

EMERGENCY: Earlier today, MAGA Republicans in Congress just rammed through legislation that could give Donald Trump the power to destroy organizations that oppose him—including MoveOn.¹

Even more terrifying, 15 Democrats voted in favor of the bill.² 

The bill, H.R. 9495, gives the Treasury Department—i.e., the Trump administration—unilateral power to declare a nonprofit to be a "terrorist-supporting organization" and strip its tax-exempt status.³ Organizations that oppose him—like MoveOn—could be shut down with just a swipe of a pen from Trump.

While Trump's Cabinet appointees soaked up the news cycle, the House tried to push this thoroughly dangerous bill under the radar last week. MoveOn members and our partners stopped them—in large part because two-thirds of the House was initially needed to pass the bill. But now Speaker Mike Johnson has figured out a new way to require only a simple majority to pass the bill, and the House voted to pass the bill earlier today.

This is a true emergency, William. We need to sound the alarm in a major way to stop H.R. 9495 and prevent Trump from shutting down nonprofit organizations! H.R. 9495 was originally written to attack organizations showing support for Palestinians, and it is a dire threat to nongovernment organizations trying to support the Palestinian people suffering in the current war, but it could give the Trump administration the ability to declare any organization as "supporting terrorists"—with no proof, no burden of evidence, no due process.^4,5

More than 150 religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+, environmental, and educational organizations, led by the American Civil Liberties Union, have spoken up against this awful bill.⁶

The House tried to push through the bill with a two-thirds majority procedure last week, and 52 Democrats voted for it.⁷ Today they needed only a simple majority, and the House passed the bill with the support of 15 Democrats. We cannot allow a MAGA-controlled Senate in January to pass this bill.

This isn't the first time that Trump or his allies have tried to weaponize the federal government against us.

When we called out the No Labels party for its reckless third-party candidacy, the group filed a Department of Justice complaint against us.⁸ We've been sued for speaking out against the January 6 insurrection.⁹

This bill is different. If it passes, it has the possibility to silence not only MoveOn but also any organization that Trump targets. And considering his history of retribution, we know he won't miss out on this opportunity to try to shut us down. It's an especially frightening prospect given Trump's previous attempt to designate anti-MAGA protesters and pro-Palestinian advocates as terrorists, and to vilify those he disagrees with as the "enemy from within."¹⁰

Now we are flooding the Senate with calls to make it very clear that we will not abide by this attack on our First Amendment rights. We need to step up before it's too late. At the same time, we must gear up our internal infrastructure to prevent against politically motivated attacks.

Trump and MAGA ​Republicans want to silence our movement and prevent us from campaigning against their draconian policy agenda.

BREAKING NEWS: Representative Sean Casten will introduce a procedural move to push for the House of Representatives to vote on releasing the Ethics Committee report on former Representative Matt Gaetz.¹

This is BIG. The American people deserve to know the truth about Matt Gaetz, the person that Trump is set to nominate to be the United States Attorney General.

Gaetz's shady record and behavior are nothing new, but in case you didn't know:

• There are claims that he assaulted a teenager.²
• Gaetz was investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking of a minor.³
• He was also being investigated by House Republicans for illicit drug use, misuse of campaign funds, and accepting bribes.⁴

The House Ethics Committee voted not to release the Gaetz report yesterday, and Democrats are now pushing to introduce a privileged resolution forcing a vote of the full House to require the panel to release the full ethics report.⁵ The ethics panel is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, and not a single Republican voted with the Democrats who wanted to release the report.⁶

Call 855-971-2474 to demand your representative push for transparency and, more importantly, accountability for former Rep. Matt Gaetz by voting to release the ethics report into his behavior.

In case you missed it, Gaetz conveniently left his position as a member of the House of Representatives last week, pausing the investigation into his activity as a member of Congress, when Trump announced Gaetz as his pick for attorney general.⁷

The new ethics report could include damning information on Matt Gaetz and now Republicans on the House Ethics Committee are refusing to release it? We cannot let this information go unseen by the public, especially as Gaetz has the potential to step into one of the most powerful positions in the country as attorney general in Trump's new administration in 2025. 

If Democrats show up in full force, and we can get just eight Republicans to vote with us, we can force the report to be released. Call 855-971-2474 to demand your representative vote for the ethics report on Rep. Matt Gaetz be released to the American public as soon as possible.

What's worse is that Trump knows all about the speculation on Gaetz's past indiscretions, and he still wants him to be attorney general of the United States. But that's just to be expected from Trump and his future extremist administration. If Trump wants Gaetz to be the next attorney general, why not let it all out in the open now and free Gaetz of any rumors of corruption? And if Republicans have nothing to hide, why wouldn't they vote for full transparency about what's in this report? While the presidential results didn't go our way, and we are taking stock of how to adjust our strategy, we know that the work that we did together played pivotal roles in the victories of key U.S. Senate races, U.S. House races, and abortion access ballot measures.

We set out to run an ambitious program to persuade, mobilize, and turn out key voters needed to win the election.

Read our 2024 election program reportback here to see how MoveOn leveraged our strength in millions of members, and innovative and precise data targeting to scale our work in the field, on the digital airwaves, and in the press.

Here are our top 10 contributions this election cycle:

At the outset of our program, we set out to engage 1.5 million targeted voters in key House and Senate races, as well as states important to the presidential election. 

We won 38 of our endorsed races (thus far), flipping four Republican-held seats in the House, helped curb abortion bans by supporting ballot measures protecting reproductive freedom in Nevada and Arizona, and defeated MAGA Republicans in the Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin U.S. Senate races.

None of this would have been possible without the massive community of more than 15,000 powerful progressive organizers, whom we call "MoveOn Vote Mobilizers." These volunteers powered our election program by leading more than 500 events geared toward building community and by talking to key voters across the country.

Our election program was centered around our ability to turn out "surge voters"—newer and infrequent voters who participated in one out of the last three elections (2022, 2020, 2018). Using our data-driven and scientific approach, we built machine learning models that helped us identify how to scale our volunteer base, reach surge voters, and identify where to drive impactful campaign interventions.

Surge voters, due to their infrequent nature of participation, need additional encouragement to turn out. We strategized how to persuade these voters by reaching them directly via voter contact methods three times and layering those attempts with targeted ads and earned-media campaigns. 

Thanks to our powerful progressive community, our campaign reached out more than 4.2 million times to our voter universe and generated more than 390,000 voting reminders through phone calls, texts, postcards, and community canvassing.

As a key thought leader in the progressive ecosystem, we sought to directly influence national narratives about the election through paid and earned media campaigns. We landed on 12,000 publications in 35 states this election cycle, combatting Republican narratives in key geographies. We also launched a seven-figure ad spend, running message-tested persuasive ads in battleground states that reached 1.6 million surge voters. We partnered with influencers such as Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, to launch the national Scoop the Vote tour, which generated 20,000 voting reminders. 

By layering our contacts with direct voter contact, as well as paid and earned media, we made a concerted effort to connect with these surge voters intentionally. 

Lastly, we saw it as important to throw down in battles against abortion bans. We supported ballot measure campaigns in Florida, Nevada, and Arizona that fought back against abortion bans. We saw all abortion access ballot measure campaigns run ahead of both presidential candidates, and in Nevada and Arizona we helped curb abortion bans by helping pass their respective ballot measures. In support of abortion access amendments, we ran phone banks and paid ads reaching more than 4 million voters in these states.

While the fight ahead continues to take shape, know that MoveOn isn't going anywhere, and we will continue to funnel, nurture, and engage our new members and volunteers who will be key to defying and pushing back against Trump and MAGA extremists. The stakes couldn't be higher. And with Trump declaring that he'll be a "dictator on day one," Biden must do everything in his power to preserve our democracy and mitigate the harm vulnerable communities may experience under Trump's authoritarian rule.

We can stop Matt Gaetz—one of Donald Trump's most despicable and loyal Cabinet nominees—from becoming the next attorney general. Here's why we must.

Gaetz has a long history of deplorable behavior, including claims that he raped a 17-year-old, and he was investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking of a minor.^1,2 He was also being investigated by House Republicans for illicit drug use, misuse of campaign funds, and accepting bribes.³

This disgusting behavior may be a bridge too far—even for the Senate Republicans who would have to confirm Gaetz.

NBC News just dropped this bombshell: "More than half of Senate Republicans, including some in senior leadership positions, privately say they don't see a path for former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to be confirmed as attorney general and would not support him to lead the Department of Justice."⁴

William, this provides us with a critical opportunity to block one of Trump's most dangerous and underqualified handpicked candidates.

According to NBC News, "Gaetz's ability to be confirmed appears on the rocks among Senate Republicans."⁵

The news organization spoke with more than a dozen sources close to Republican senators who said that "there are not enough votes in the Senate to confirm Gaetz." Some sources even "estimated that closer to 30 Republicans consider him unqualified."⁶

But Trump's team isn't giving up and is pledging to fight to the bitter end to confirm Gaetz—even if it takes an ugly battle. Because they know that Gaetz is beholden to Trump and will pander to his every whim.

William, we must win that battle and ensure Matt Gaetz NEVER becomes the attorney general of the United States.
